However, you should also be aware that life insurers have strict guidelines if you have had any pre-existing medical condition.

We will provide you with the information you need so you understand how you will be rated by a life insurance company.

What is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

Both forms of this disease are a form of cancer. Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is far more prevalent than Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

These 2 types of cancer classifications are a cancer of the lymphatic system which comprises your immune system. The cells in your lymphatic system become cancerous when they grow abnormally and reproduce.

This abnormal cellular growth can spread to other parts or organs in your body and compromises your ability to fight disease.

The cancer is diagnosed as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when the cells analyzed contain a certain type of cell known as a Reed-Sternberg cell. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is most often diagnosed at younger ages and has a higher cure than Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma which has been steadily increasing in greater frequency over the past few decades is actually a heterogeneous (varied) group of over 30 types of different cancer. These different types of cancer have microscopic appearance difference and in the biological classification of the lymphocytes.

These different classifications also have differences in their biological behavior as some forms of this cancer are much more aggressive than other forms of this cancer.

Both types of this cancer can occur at any age but the risk for developing Non Hodgkin’s tends to increase with advanced age.

Both types of this disease are more likely to develop in the lymph nodes of the upper body such as in the neck, chest or under the armpits.

Symptoms for both types may include:

  • Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever and chills
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss — as much as 10 percent or more of your body weight
  • Loss of appetite
  • Itching
  • Increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol or pain in your lymph nodes after drinking alcohol

The prognosis and treatment for either type of these cancers will depend on the type of malignant lymphocyte and the location of the tumor, and the extent to which the cancer may have spread.

The cancer is often treatable and survivable.

You should first know that if you have been recently diagnosed or are still receiving treatment with either of these cancers, you will automatically be declined for traditional coverage.

However, we do have some guaranteed issue life insurance policies that may still be an option for you.  These guaranteed issue policies do not ask health questions so you will be approved. However, your life expectancy should be at least 2 years for these policies to make sense for you.

Call us with the details of your situation and we will do our best to find you coverage.

Early Hodgkin’s Lymphoma may be insurable as soon as 1 year after successful treatment.

For other Lymphomas you will only be considered for a life insurance policy if you are in remission or have been cancer free for 3 or more years.

The waiting period will vary from insurer to insurer and will depend on the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease, the stage and grade of the cancer, along with your age and overall health.

Some insurers may also add on a surcharge or flat rate on top of your premium for an indeterminate period if you apply near or have just completed the required waiting period. The longer you have been cancer free – the better the rating, but the best you likely hope for under optimum conditions is a “standard” rating.

Rating Factors for Hodgkin’s and Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Used By Life Insurers

The rating factors or information required by an insurer may include:

  • Date and details surrounding the initial diagnosis
  • Date of final treatment and the manner in which the cancer was treated
  • The stage and/or subcategory of the type of cancer diagnosed
  • Whether there has been any recurrence and applicable details
  • Medications and any other types of treatment that were used
  • Evidence of appropriate follow-up exams
  • Any other health issues

Other pre-existing conditions like breast cancer or thyroid cancer – even if you beat it decades ago – can still affect your ratings. Giving your insurance agent details on your medical history can help them find the best company for you.
